What I Would Do If I Had to Start My Fitness Journey Over Again

Jay Reynolds Mar 15, 2026

Introduction

If I had to start my fitness journey over again, I would do things very differently.

Not because I failed, but because I wasted a lot of time figuring out what actually works. I jumped from program to program, chased trends, and overcomplicated things that should have been simple.

Looking back, progress is not as complicated as it seems. Most people just focus on the wrong things.

Here is exactly what I would do if I were starting from scratch.

I Would Stop Jumping Between Programs

One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was constantly switching workouts. Every time I felt like something was not working fast enough, I would move on to something new.

At the time, I thought I just had not found the right plan yet. In reality, I never gave anything enough time to actually work.

Progress in the gym comes from consistency and progression, not constantly changing direction. If I could start over, I would pick a simple program and commit to it long enough to see real results.

Most people are not stuck because their plan is bad. They are stuck because they never stick with anything long enough.

I Would Focus on Getting Stronger First

I used to judge my workouts based on how tired or sore I felt. If I left the gym exhausted, I assumed it was a good session.

But being tired is not the goal. Progress is.

If I had to start again, I would focus on one thing above everything else: getting stronger over time. That means tracking my lifts, paying attention to performance, and trying to improve week after week.

Strength is one of the clearest indicators that what you are doing is working. When your numbers go up, your body follows.

Instead of chasing intensity, I would chase progress.

I Would Keep Things Simple

I used to think I needed the perfect plan to see results. The perfect split, the perfect exercises, the perfect diet.

That mindset only made things harder.

If I could go back, I would simplify everything. A few effective exercises done consistently will always beat a complicated routine you cannot stick to.

Progress comes from repeating the basics over time. Not from constantly trying to optimize every detail.

The simpler your approach, the easier it is to stay consistent. And consistency is what actually drives results.

I Would Build Habits Instead of Relying on Motivation

Motivation feels great when it is there, but it does not last.

There were plenty of times I felt excited and locked in for a week or two, only to fall off as soon as life got busy or I lost that initial energy.

If I had to start again, I would stop relying on motivation completely. Instead, I would focus on building habits and routines that make showing up automatic.

That means training at the same times, removing friction, and making fitness part of my lifestyle instead of something I “try” to do.

The people who see results are not always the most motivated. They are the most consistent.stency is what actually drives results.

I Would Stop Comparing Myself to Others

This was one of the biggest mental obstacles for me.

I constantly compared my progress, my strength, and my physique to people who were years ahead of me. It made me feel like I was not doing enough, even when I was making progress.

If I could start over, I would focus only on my own journey.

Everyone starts at a different point. Everyone progresses at a different pace. The only thing that actually matters is whether you are improving over time.

When you stop comparing yourself to others, it becomes a lot easier to stay focused and keep going.

Conclusion

If I had to start my fitness journey over again, I would not chase shortcuts or overcomplicate the process.

I would keep things simple, stay consistent, focus on getting stronger, and give everything enough time to work.

That is what actually leads to results.

And it is what most people overlook in the beginning.

If you want a structured plan that removes the guesswork and helps you stay consistent, that is exactly what I help my clients with.
